Up the Airy Mountain, Down the Rushy Glen: Lisnabreeny and Cregagh Glen

A new, expertly guided walking tour by war historian Michael Burns
About this Event
From the ancient Rath of Lisnabreeny overlooking the city of Belfast to the natural paradise of the Cregagh Glen, for many years the people of Belfast have walked the hills of Castlereagh.
Yet, most don’t know of the history that lies beneath their feet. These hills have been called home by ancient Celtic settlers, medieval lords of Ulster and pioneering merchants of Belfast’s Industrial Revolution. They have witnessed the history of the city as it has grown into what it is today- through boom and decline, feast and famine, conflict and peace alike.
Thieves, soldiers, poets and even physicists have walked these paths. Join me on August 25th to follow in their footsteps and take a dander up the glen to the ‘fort of the fairies’.
Join local historian, Michael Burns to hear about some of the events, stories, and people that have shaped Belfast and left their indelible mark on its history.
This linear tour will last about 90 minutes beginning at Cregagh Glen entrance on the Upper Knockbreda Road and finishing at Lisnabreeny Rath. Participants can walk back together down the Glen or arrange their own transport from Lisnabreeny. Parking is available on streets surrounding the Cregagh Road.
The walk is somewhat strenuous as it is mainly uphill and can be steep at times, but there's rest points throughout the tour and well-maintained paths. Appropriate footwear is essential.
