Casselberry Arts Center is proud to present Unreality of the Present, a group exhibition of paintings and sculptures featuring four distinctive Florida artists.
On view through March 27, Mon-Fri, 9 AM- 4 PM
In art critic Dean Kissick’s recent piece for Harpers, he laments the state of an art world where aesthetics has been totally supplanted by message. He writes, “The unreality of the present moment should be a boon for artists and all who deal in the imagination. I don’t particularly care to have my awareness raised; I’d rather view art that tears open my consciousness, that opens portals into the mysterious.”
The artists in this prospective group exhibition offer precisely what Kissick calls for: art representing the “unreality of the present” in all its chaotic, fragmentary confusion. This group exhibition, titled "Unreality of the Present," will present the work of four compelling Central Florida artists: MOTHERSETH, Adam Lavigne, Sara Akbari, and Zayd Latib. Despite the differences between their subject matter and techniques, the convergence of their approaches reveals something crucial about our “unreal” cultural and artistic present.
These artists dispatch messages told by the image itself: the art speaks in visual ambiguity rather than imposing a solid and already-interpreted idea on the viewer. “Unreality of the Present” reminds us that one does not need to “achieve” something with art: art acts as a mirror to the unreal world.
