Unlocking the Past: Celebrating the Horner Library’s Noel Prize

The German Society’s Joseph P. Horner Memorial Library was recently honored by the prestigious Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries (PACSCL). PACSCL awarded the Horner Library its Noel Prize for excellence in increasing access to Special Collections materials. The Horner Library's archival transcription project opens previously inaccessible historical documents to German Society members, historians, and family researchers. These precious records, which have been undecipherable to most people for over a century, are now available in digitized typescript to readers all over the world.
On Thursday, June 25, from 6-8pm, we’ll celebrate this achievement with an event at the Horner Library, where you will have a chance to see the original manuscripts and hear from members of the Library’s Transcription Tuesday volunteer group, who will discuss some of the fascinating stories they have uncovered. If you have wondered how one can go about learning to read Kurrent, the old German handwriting, come hear how we’ve done it!
