The Twin Cities premiere of critically-acclaimed indie film, Unholy Communion, starring Adam Bartley (Longmire), Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men), Laura Robards, and Irena Flury. Followed by a Q&A with the director and numerous cast and crew will be in attendance!
Written and directed by Patrick Coyle, based on the award-winning novel by Thomas Rumreich about a retired Catholic priest who is murdered outside a sleepy Minnesota town. Then another. A local cop's investigation unearths buried secrets that begin to implicate an entire community. Called “an extremely well-made, beautifully-acted crime thriller with a star turn by Adam Bartley” (Pioneer Press).
“Patrick Coyle has made a fascinating film that combines the intricacies of a thriller with the traumatic effects from the psychological scars of abuse. In this deeply personal story, the sanctity of the Catholic Church’s hierarchy is profoundly questioned.” — Minneapolis Monitor
"An exquisite presentation of an exceedingly sensitive and difficult topic involving the sins of the Catholic Church. I can't get it off my mind. Authentic. Wonderful performances. Vincent Kartheiser is phenomenal." — West Seventh Heritage Press
“Patrick Coyle has made three films: The Public Domain (2016) Detective Fiction (2005) and Into Temptation (2009), all critical successes. His reputation has been secured as one of the most serious and interesting filmmakers in MN. He makes movies that make you think.”— Mpls/St. Paul Magazine
“Finally a filmmaker making movies for adults.” — Variety
“Minnesota’s Patrick Coyle continues his advance as a major voice in American independent film.” — Lavender Magazine
Writer/director Patrick Coyle’s first feature film, Detective Fiction, based on his award-winning stage play, premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and won awards at the Newport International Film Festival in Rhode Island and the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Film Festival. It was released theatrically by Landmark Theatres and played throughout North America on the Sundance Channel. His second film, Into Temptation, starring Kristin Chenoweth and Jeremy Sisto, won Best Acting awards at the Newport Beach Film Festival and played theatrically in seven major markets. It also played on the Showtime and Movie Channel Networks for 18 months and for three years on Netflix. It is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime. His third film, The Public Domain, funded by a grant from the state of Minnesota and unifying around the tragic collapse of the I-35 bridge over the Mississippi River, was purchased by Landmark Films and played theatrically in the Twin Cities. Unholy Communion, an adaptation of Dr. Thomas Rumreich’s novel, was completed in December 2024. It is currently playing the film festival circuit and has been picked up for US and Canadian distribution by Freestyle Releasing. Patrick also writes, produces, and directs new plays as the artistic director of Mariah Theatre Company in Saint Paul. He has been an adjunct professor of film at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design since 2012. He lives in Saint Paul with his wife, publisher and playwright Lily Baber Coyle, and their two daughters, Clara Rose and Ruby Sue.
