About this Event
Join us this important conversation with the founders of Black Wall Street Reno about history, context, and what comes next.
On June 16, we’ll explore the histories of Juneteenth, Black Wall Street, and Black Lives Matter—what happened, why these moments matter, and how they continue to shape the world we live in today.
- Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, the day enslaved people in Texas were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s now a federal holiday and a reminder that freedom has not always been immediate or equal.
- Black Wall Street (Tulsa Race Massacre) refers to the Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma, once a thriving Black community and economic hub. In 1921, a white mob destroyed the neighborhood in a violent attack, killing residents and wiping out generational wealth. It remains one of the most devastating acts of racial violence in U.S. history. Black Wall Street Reno was named to honor this history.
- Black Lives Matter is a movement that began in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s killer and grew into a global call for racial justice after the M**der of George Floyd in 2020. It focuses on ending systemic racism, police violence, and inequities that impact Black communities.
This isn’t just about looking back. It’s about understanding how these histories connect to the present. And what it means to show up as an ally today.
If you’ve been wanting to learn more, ask questions, and figure out how to take meaningful action, this is a great place to start.
