Understanding Gender-Based Violence — Forms and Impact

This opening workshop offers an introduction to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), exploring the many forms it can take — physical, emotional, sexual, economic, and digital. Participants will gain insight into the individual and collective impacts of violence on women, families, and communities, fostering a shared understanding that supports both survivors and allies.

The session aims to build a common framework of understanding:

• Survivors can begin to recognize their experiences as forms of violence.
• Family, friends, and community members can better understand its seriousness and the structural inequalities that perpetuate it.

Leia Syed (she/they)

Educational Outreach Program Lead at Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre

With an academic background in sexual victimology, Leia is passionate about transforming society through education, raising awareness of the diversity of victimization, and breaking cultural barriers that prevent access to support in the anti-violence sector. In their free time, Leia enjoys experimenting with new dessert recipes and updating their recipe book. Leia looks forward to collaborating with Latincouver to continue building inclusive and informed communities.

Angela Rodriguez (they/them)

Resource and Data Analyst at Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre

Angela’s academic background in Queer Political Theory and Indigenous Epistemologies informs their approach to data as a tool for equity, systemic change, and social justice. A Venezuelan immigrant, Angela has over six years of experience in the anti-violence, provincial, and Landback sectors, centering community care, accountability, and the amplification of marginalized voices. Outside of work, Angela enjoys organizing community events, creating art, and celebrating with friends and family.
