About this Event
Childhood is becoming increasingly complex as young people adjust and respond to living in our present-day world. Mental health has become the principal concern, as children struggle with a host of issues such as anxiety, school attendance, self-confidence and social courage. Friendship dynamics can be tricky and bullying, whether the mode is verbal, physical, cyber or exclusionary comes at the cost of happiness, safety and belonging. Children are sometimes also living in complicated family compositions which can be difficult for them to navigate. And, of course, the extent of screen use and the online social landscape also have their impact.
As childhood has evolved, so too have parenting approaches. Parents and carers are often at a loss to know how to help. Their child’s moods and behaviours can be difficult to understand and influence. And it is a general consensus that children are less resilient than they may have been a generation or so ago.
So much time is invested in reassuring and attempting to build the self-esteem of anxious children – without much success. Similarly, there are constant battles with under-motivated children about getting off their screens and doing homework, with parents concerned about their child’s attitude, lack of respect and tantrums. These children seem to demand life on their terms.
Join Bronagh Starrs, renowned psychotherapist and parenting consultant, for this insightful presentation for parents, carers and professionals where she examines the many challenges and pitfalls which often render parental interventions ineffective. Participants will gain an understanding of the dynamics of contemporary childhood and a trove of effective parenting strategies will be presented.
