About this Event
They say you are what you eat, but what does this actually mean? Discover how the gut microbiota plays not only a role in keeping you physically healthy but also its significant effects on mood and mental wellbeing as well as the development of mood disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Join Dr Harriët Schellekens to learn how our food intake can regulate our behaviour.
In this talk, we will explore new evidence of microbiota-mediated effects on metabolic health, food intake behaviour and the stress response. We will also look at recent findings from Dr Schellekens’ laboratory of a newly identified probiotic. This probiotic has shown beneficial effects on glucose metabolism and cortisol awakening response in overweight and obese humans, and early life healthy eating behaviour in mice. We will also explore how this new research highlights the concept of the microbiota in metabolic and mental health.
Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7:30pm - come down early to grab a good seat!

Dr. Harriët Schellekens is a senior lecturer at the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience, a principal investigator with Food for Health Ireland, and a funded investigator at APC Microbiome Ireland, at University College Cork, Cork, IRELAND. Her group investigates the impact of diet & nutrition and the gut microbiome on human health and physiology, in particular in the context of obesity and stress. She uses mechanistic and translational studies bridging basic and clinical aspects of neuroscience and nutrition to investigate the concept of the link between metabolic disease and mental health across the lifespan, and the potential amelioration of both via microbiome targeted approaches. Her laboratory investigates the mechanism of the bi-directional communication of the microbiota-gut-brain axis, including immune and neuroendocrine pathways, G-Protein Coupled Receptors, and signaling via microbiota-derived metabolites.
