About this Event
UNBOUND:
UNBOUND (UB) is a performance ritual and community-powered project that works with dance, storytelling, poetics, and communal gatherings to uplift the lives, legacies, and stories of the artists’ Indigenous ancestors (‘genízaros’) who were enslaved during the Spanish colonial period. Sarah Hogland-Gurulé is directing and collaboratively choreographing the project alongside dance/theater artists Lupita Salazar and Gabriel Carrion-Gonzales. This project is housed under the Santa Fe-based organization Dancing Earth Creations.
We are deeply humbled by the opportunity to share our work in Taos, a community with a history of being affected by colonization. You're invited to witness and dive deep into this long-suppressed history. Come with an open heart & trust in our collective ability and right to reconnect with our Ancestors.
“Producing art in Genízaro communities helps create our collective consciousness and informs our cultural futurity.” - Moises Gonzales, Genízaro Cultural Leader
1:00 pm-1:30 pm: Community Elder Preccession Community Gathering
- A community elder and the UNBOUND artists will guide a ritual to honor all Native people who have been enslaved throughout present-day New Mexico and southern Colorado.
- Elder lead prayer
- Time to reflect in communal silence
2:00 pm - 3:00 pm : UNBOUND Presentation
3:00 pm - 3:30 pm : UNBOUND Post-Show Q&A
- Communal Listening to 2 Ranchera Songs
- Guided Meditation
- Invitation to share reflections on where the work landed in our bodies
Your support is appreciated!
All contributions will go towards sharing this work and other workshops created to other Genizaro communities in the Southwest. Some venues need support in sharing this story within their community; your support would help us reach them! Unbound has been 2 years in development and finally emerges after taking time and moving at the speed of trust.
Location
This event is held at the Wild Flower Playhouse, a local venue space consistently supporting multicultural projects managed by one of our very own Genízara Prima's. Wildflower Playhouse is located in Taos, on unceded land belonging to the Taos Pueblo, Ute, Lipan Apache, and Tiwa people. We honor their stewardship of their ancestral homelands past, present, and future.
We thank our sponsor/partners at the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA), the Institute of American Indian Arts, Wildflower Playhouse, Ehren Key Natay, Nacha Mendez, & always, Dancing Earth Creations.
