About this Event

Unanchored City explores the city as a site of movement, displacement, temporary belonging, and unstable coordinates. The exhibition brings together visual art, performance, and sound-based practices, alongside related theatre performance and sound workshop.

Unanchored City is a multidisciplinary group exhibition presented by DOMO Collective at Copeland Gallery.

Taking Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities as a point of departure, the exhibition reimagines the city not as a fixed geographical location, but as an internal structure shaped by memory, movement, language, desire and perception.

The exhibition considers how cities remain within us after we have left them. Places may return through bodily sensations, fragmented memories, untranslated words, repeated routines or the gaze of others. In this context, to be “unanchored” does not simply mean to be lost or rootless. It describes a condition in which identity and belonging are no longer secured by a single, stable centre.

Bringing together artists working across installation, moving image, sound, sculpture, painting and performance, Unanchored City unfolds through five interconnected zones:

Memory and Absence
Gaze
Liminal Passage
Desire and Language
Mutation

Each zone offers a different way of encountering the city as an emotional, sensory and psychological landscape. Rather than presenting a single linear narrative, the exhibition invites visitors to move through fragments, thresholds and shifting perspectives, gradually constructing a city of their own.

Alongside the exhibition, a programme of live theatre, artist performance and participatory sound walking workshops expands its central questions through movement, listening, performance and collective experience.

🪜 As You Wish 🎤

Live theatre performance

Responding to the themes of Unanchored City, As You Wish follows two anonymous figures moving through an unstable urban environment.

Unable to fully settle or locate themselves, the figures use occupation, repetition and temporary encounters as fragile ways of understanding their existence. City noise, movement and uncertainty become active pressures within the performance rather than a passive background.

A live artist performance presented within the exhibition space, activating the relationship between the body, the audience and the surrounding installation.

The performance forms part of the Private View programme and extends the exhibition’s exploration of unstable memory, movement and urban experience.

🎧 Scoring Copeland Through Sound Walking 🚶

Sound Walking Workshop

Scoring Copeland Through Soundwalking is a one-hour participatory workshop led by London-based interdisciplinary artist Juno N Kim and Geneva-based sound artist Gold Kim.

Taking place in and around Copeland Park, the workshop invites participants to experience the area through guided soundwalking, mapping, sound drawing and site-specific listening exercises.

Participants will walk through Copeland Park while searching for overlooked sounds, hidden rhythms, disappearing sounds and sounds behind other sounds. Using simple drawing and field-recording techniques, the group will collect, map and interpret the sounds they encounter before returning for a short collective reflection.

Marking the artists’ third collaboration, the workshop is conceived as a shared journey of walking, listening, finding and documenting. It explores how attentive listening can reveal new perspectives on everyday life and the urban environment.

No previous experience of sound art is required.
