For any questions, you can contact Master McGee at (901) 552-2999 or email him at [email protected].
Disc Golf
Disc golf is distinctive because players need to understand the physics of disc flight. Beginners often struggle with the disc veering to the left, especially for right-handed throwers. Therefore, your instruction should emphasize control over power.
1. Equipment Knowledge:
Not all Frisbees are the same. It's important to explain the three main categories:
- Putters: have blunt edges, are slow, and fly straight. They are ideal for learning form.
- Mid-ranges: slightly sharper and versatile for most shots.
- Drivers: have sharp edges and high speed. Beginners should avoid High-Speed Distance Drivers as they require high arm speed and can be challenging for novices.
2. The Grip & Stance:
A good throw starts with the foundation before the arm movement.
- Power Grip: fingers inside the rim for distance.
- Fan Grip: fingers spread on the flight plate for touch and putting.
- The "Line": emphasize that the throw is a pull across the chest, not a wide swinging arc.
3. Flight Physics (Understanding the "Why"):
Help beginners grasp why the disc behaves as it does.
- Stability: explain Understable (turns right), Stable (flies straight), and Overstable (fades left).
- The Fade: every disc naturally fades at the end of its flight as it loses speed.
- Nose Angle: stress the importance of keeping the nose of the disc down to avoid stalling and climbing.
4. Basic Rules & Etiquette:
Disc golf has a relaxed culture with rules to maintain the flow.
- The Tee Pad: the starting point.
- The "Lie": next throw is taken directly behind the previous disc's landing spot.
- Order of Play: the person farthest from the hole throws first (Away is play).
