The Palindrome at Eaglemount Winery is thrilled to host Ukrainian urban folk band Kommuna Lux performing a high-energy charity concert on Saturday, October 26 at 7pm, 6pm doors. Their performances across the US and Canada have raised over $11,000 for humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, reminding audiences of their country’s vibrant spirit and fight for freedom.
Kommuna Lux is committed to spreading their vibrant, bohemian Odesa folk music and raising awareness and support for Ukraine. Their repertoire includes songs that tell the history and spirit of their hometown, Odesa. This historic port city was recently the site of a devastating attack that killed dozens of civilians. As the war rages on in its 3rd year, the ballads that echo the city's past reflect the vibrant cultural narrative of Odesa’s enduring legacy. The group toured California in September and will perform at the Palindrome on Oct. 26 before heading to the Royal Room in Seattle.
Notable songs include 7:40, a tune from the late 1800s with a driving rhythmic pulse that propels it forward just like the trains that chugged into the Odesa station at 7:40 every day from the Moldovan city of Bendery.
By attending these concerts, audiences not only enjoy exceptional music, but also contribute to a vital cause. Donations fund much-needed hospital beds for burn victims on the front lines, as well as medicine and protective equipment to organizations throughout Ukraine. Through their 501(c)(3) charity KMLX, funds raised by Kommuna Lux will go directly to the Rotary Club’s Hospital Beds for Kramatorsk project.
“With a core group consisting of Bagrat Tsurkan on lead vocals, Volodymyr Gitin on clarinet, Oleg Vasyanovych on accordion, Yaroslav Besh on trombone, and Serhii Poltorak on drums — along with a rotation of other musicians — the band performs 100-year-old folk tunes inspired by the dark humor of “‘street bandit’ folklore, klezmer and Balkan rhythms.” — Niva Ashkenazi, Jewish News of Northern CA (https://jweekly.com/2024/09/13/from-odesa-with-love-ukrainian-band-to-bring-klezmer-and-balkan-spunk-to-bay-area-music-scene )
