The bandura, a heavy-bodied string instrument native to Ukraine, has many international analogs, including the Turkish oud, the European mandolin, the African banjo and the Venezuelan bandola. In its native country, centuries of historical significance and stacks of original compositions have enshrined the bandura as a national treasure. The Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus can trace its beginnings directly to 1902, when ethnographer Hnat Khotkevych formed the first UBC orchestra. A devoted core group of 17 musicians saw the ensemble through World War II, ensuring that the collective would continue to tour under the Chorus umbrella for well over a century. The group's 2025 program, already performed at major concert halls all over the world, is more than just a musical experience; it's a celebration of Ukraine's cultural heritage and resilience filled with captivating music.
