UK Surf Cinema is a new national touring showcase that celebrates story-driven surf films and the people behind them on the big screen. Born from a grassroots cinema project in Bristol, it’s now heading out on the road to surf hubs and coastal cities across the UK.
Each event will feature three films carefully chosen for their heart, purpose and storytelling power: Salt by Alice Ward, a personal story of surfing, identity and resilience; Finding San Nicolas by Martin Dorey & John Cutts, a nostalgic journey through a 1968 surf trip told with original Super 8 footage; and Riptide by Kristian Kane & Lewis Carter, an inspiring portrait of Welsh surfer Mark “Jock” Jones navigating cancer with the healing power of the sea.
This platform supports filmmakers from the ground up — every film is licensed and paid for per screening, with a fund being built to support mentoring and new projects. On top of that, £1 from every ticket sold goes to The Wave Project, whose surf therapy programmes help young people across the UK.

Salt

Salt traces Alice Ward’s life through her connection to the sea — from her cystic fi brosis diagnosis as a child, to becoming the fi rst woman in Ireland to fi lm surfi ng in the water. A powerful short about resilience, perspective and the importance of salt in all its forms.
Finding San Nicolas

In 1968, John Cutts and Roger Tout set off for the Canary Islands with surfboards, 8mm fi lm rolls and an article from a surf magazine. What they found was paradise. Told with modern interviews and John’s original Super 8 reels, Finding San Nicolas is a nostalgic ode to adventure, friendship and surf discovery.
Riptide

Riptide follows Welsh surfer Mark “Jock” Jones as his surf-dominated life is upended by a diagnosis of blood cancer. A story of resilience, healing and perspective, the fi lm beautifully explores how surfi ng and the ocean can support both mental and physical wellbeing in the face of life’s hardest challenges.
Every ticket directly supports surf therapy. £1 from each sale goes to The Wave Project, a charity that helps young people improve their mental health and confi dence through surfi ng. By coming along, you’re not just watching surf fi lms — you’re making a difference in the wider surf community.
