About this Event

This event is open to all, but booking is required.

At University of the Arts London (UAL), we acknowledge the dedication and intention of practitioners through this year's Black History Month theme, Reclaiming Narratives. In this lecture series, we identify community changemakers who address social and racial justice and its impacts on art and design pedagogy. Join us for a series of talks from our culturally varied speakers on decolonising course content to support the intersectionality of our students.

Date: Wednesday 2 October 2024

Time: 2pm – 5pm

Location: Lecture Theatre C, London College of Communication

Lunch will be provided and served from 12pm in the Typo Café.

DARCUS HOWE COLLECTIVE: We honour the memory of Darcus Howe (1943-2017), a pioneer in the independence of Trinidad, via his collective, reviewing his leadership accomplishments in post-colonial Britain as a champion of social justice. He first came to prominence as a defendant in the Mangrove Nine Trial, before serving as editor of the journal Race Today. Howe was chairman of the Notting Hill Carnival, as well as working as a British broadcaster – hosting the Channel 4 programme Devil’s Advocate.

Over the course of two decades, Marlene has taught art, craft and design in multicultural schools of all ages. She is also the project lead for the Visualise Project, led by the Runnymede Trust London – the first research commission into access to the visual arts for global majority students.
