TYPE-IN: TYPEWRITING IN THE NEO-ANALOG AGE
When is the last time you used a typewriter? For work or school in the last century? Yesterday? Never?
Whatever your status or skills, the Type-In is an opportunity for families, kids six and up, and adults young and old to enjoy the hands-on satisfaction – the analog simplicity – of putting thoughts on paper with a typewriter.
Enthusiasts are encouraged to bring their typewriters along. In addition, different models and generations of typewriters will be provided, including a large font IBM Selectric.
Activities will include a short talk on the history of the writing machine, plenty of time for typing, a Typewriter Poet, and a speed test.
Have a typewriter stashed in a closet or attic, or one you are currently using? Bring it along, no matter what shape it is in and learn more about it. Artist John Noble’s typewriter will be among vintage machines on display.
12:30 Speaker Bryan Kravitz, co-owner and founder of Philly Typewriter, a famous brick-and-mortar shop in Philadelphia, will give a brief talk on the history of the typewriter and its current appeal.
1:30 – 4:30 TYPE! Find inspiration and follow prompts in the museum’s galleries, including the sea creatures of the Oceanus exhibit, maritime family activities, or archival objects in the Writing Room. Or just type anything.
Ongoing will be a Typewriter Road Show”: Michael Ardito, an expert in typewriter repair, will evaluate the condition and provide insight into the history and use of machines brought to the event.
2 p.m. Typewriter poet Marina Gasparyan, will be on hand to compose a poem with you.
3 p.m. Typewriting speed contest
The event is free. A donation to the Noble Maritime Collection is encouraged. Find Information and registration
