Encore screening!
One of the most-admired bookings at the Webster Film Series in recent months is our May 2026 sleeper hit Two Seasons, Two Strangers, now returning to our screen for one last show. Winner of the 2025 Locarno Golden Leopard, Japanese writer-director Sho Miyake’s Two Seasons, Two Strangers is a soulful adaptation based on “A View of the Seaside” and “Mr. Ben and His Igloo” by the manga master Yoshiharu Tsuge. Miyake’s delicate mise en abyme conjures a gentle yet haunting ripple of existential ruminations. The film is willed into existence from the moment of inception, as Korean screenwriter Li (Eun-kyung Shim, Train to Busan) puts pencil to the pages of a humble notebook—an act of transmutation that plunges the audience into the weary summer breeze of the first season, where a young woman named Nagisa (Yuumi Kawai, a rising star in Japanese cinema, recently seen on the Film Series’ big screen in Desert of Namibia and Renoir) crosses paths with a lonesome young man named Natsuo (Mansaku Takada) in a seaside village. The rhythm of crashing waves gradually transforms into the snow-muted stillness of Li’s own winter exile, the second season of the film, where she meets an eccentric innkeeper named Benzo (Shinichi Tsutsumi, who last year appeared in the Japanese miniseries After the Quake, based on Haruki Murakami’s writings).
In Japanese with English subtitles.
