About this Event

Eugene Joubert join forces to put together an unforgettable art song programme with some of the greatest poets as the focus.

The title of the recital refers to Lord Alfred Douglas's poem, "Two Loves", from which the famous phrase is taken: "I am the love that dare not speak its name". One cannot help but notice a connection between I.D. du Plessis's poem "Strange Love" and Douglas's poem.

Chris Vale takes the listener on a magical journey, bringing the poetry to life with his velvet voice and gift for storytelling. Franco Prinsloo highlights some of his latest art songs with settings from Shakespeare, NP. Van Wyk Louw, W.E.G Louw and Rainer Maria Rilke. Prinsloo has made his mark in recent years as one of South Africa’s foremost composers. Audiences are moved by his unique tonal language, melodious writing, and sensitivity to the text. This selection of verses, in song form, is sensitively accompanied by Shakespearean settings by Gerald Finzi and Wolfgang Korngold. Eugene Joubert is known for his brilliance of tone and exceptional interpretation. The programme also includes the seldom performed cycle on texts by I.D du Plessis "Vreemde Liefde", set to music by Hubert du Plessis.

The art song genre consists essentially of two equivocal elements: The text, and the music. In this highly evocative recital, these two loves are highlighted. A must for lovers of song and poetry.
