ATTEND ONE LOCATION OR THE OTHER, OR BOTH! NO REGISTRATION/ATTENDANCE REQUIRMENTS!Jazz Outreach Initiative's popular free youth summer jazz classes, "Jammin' With JOI," returns weekly this year with TWO locations to choose from beginning first week of June through first week of August!
Students of all abilities from middle through high school are joined by JOI's professional jazz mentors to study jazz language and play with them and other students from across Southern Nevada in a fun, relaxed, and supportive atmosphere.
Students do not have to register, can come any time, and are welcome to bring friends. Students can attend one or both locations without limitations. They do not have to be members of Jazz Outreach Initiative's other programs, and all skill levels are welcome. STRINGS AND VOCALISTS TOO!
Jazz Outreach Initiative believes jazz is a great unifier, teaching tolerance and patience, work ethic, listening skills, negotiation, and collaboration, and more. JOI connects the language of music to the language of life through education, outreach, and performances for nearly 10,000 local kids annually.
Students attending any week can expect to be supported by the instructors and their peers as they develop friendships beyond their home band rooms. They're also welcome to bring their friends from band, and parents/family members are welcome to stay and enjoy if they'd like or drop off and pick up.
Every student who attends gets to play. Those who have never improvised before learn easy simple solos together with others as they become more confident and comfortable over time. Those with more experience grow by helping others while gaining additional knowledge and skills from our professional jazz musicians, mentors, and educators. All students learn about jam session etiquette and procedure as well as learning how to navigate chord changes and song form.
