Drawing on 15 years of research — and a remarkable database of over 8,000 patients — his work reveals the human side of asylum life and earned him a doctorate from UWE.

In this thought-provoking talk and discussion, Dr. Tobia examines how gender shaped experiences of care and control within the asylum. How were men and women treated differently — and what does that tell us about society then and now?
