Join The Twisted Spine for a special night celebrating the release of Hien Nguyen's debut novel, TWIN TIDES!
About this Event

The Twisted Spine is honored to welcome author Hien Nguyen to the shop to celebrate the launch of her debut novel, TWIN TIDES! Hien will be joined in conversation by author Jade Song (Chlorine), and the event will also feature a reading by Carolina Đỗ & Rebecca Ho, two of the voice actors from the audiobook.

Proudly presented with support from the Asian American Writers' Workshop (AAWW).

About TWIN TIDES:

Long-lost twin sisters unravel the mystery behind their mother's disappearance and face the family betrayal that ultimately separated them in this breathtaking speculative young adult thriller.

Heiress and influencer Caliste Ha lives a glamorous life in an LA high rise, her perfectly curated social media feed hiding the cracks in her family. Across the country, Aria Nguyen is barely surviving as a freshman and academic scammer at Georgetown University. They have never met.

That changes with one unexpected and grim phone call. Their long-missing mother has been found dead in Les Eaux, Minnesota. Upon arrival in the sleepy town, Caliste and Aria discover another shocker—they are identical twins.

Ready to unearth the secrets that led to their mother’s death and their separation, they start looking for answers. But a vengeful ghost is haunting the waters, and an unknown enemy is watching their every move.

Can Aria and Caliste unravel all the sinister mysteries of Les Eaux, or will the town’s deadly secrets ultimately drag them under?

Hien Nguyen (she/her) is a Best of the Net nominated speculative fiction writer who writes about Vietnamese ghosts, monsters, and mythology. She is interested in the uplifting and haunting forms of human connection, and how writing speculative fiction can lay those bare. Hien’s work has been published by All Worlds Wayfarer, Fahmidan Journal, and others. She is a mentor for WriteGirl & Round Table Mentor, and a 2024 Roots. Wounds. Words. Writer’s Retreat Fellow. Twin Tides is Hien's debut novel.
An indoor cat disguised as a human, Hien enjoys bird watching with her significant other, binging Asian variety shows, and absorbing hot pot broth like a sponge. Born in the Midwest, Hien has ping-ponged across coasts but is currently based in the South.

Jade Song is a writer, filmmaker, and artist. Lauded as “visionary and disturbing,” her debut novel Chlorine was selected as a New York Times Editor’s Choice, awarded the ALA Alex Award and the Writer’s Center First Novel Prize, and translated into French, Mandarin Chinese, Italian, and other languages. Song’s second novel, I Love You Don’t Die, will be published in March 2026, and their debut short story collection, Ox Ghost Snake Demon, is forthcoming in 2027. She pole dances and lives with too many books.

Carolina Đỗ is a theatre maker, community organizer, and proud descendant of Vietnamese freedom fighters and refugees. She's joyfully a downtown theater baby with a couple of Broadway and TV credits for health insurance and residuals.

An alum of the Soho Rep Writer-Director Lab, JACKLabs, Fresh Ground Pepper Playground Playgroup, and Orchard Project Greenhouse Lab, Carolina’s work is a powerful blend of storytelling and advocacy. Carolina’s writing has been supported by residencies and fellowships at MACDOWELL, JACK, The Hearth, Fault Line Theatre, Piper Theater, and Naked Angels.

Currently she is a Ma-Yi Lab Playground member and part of the Episodic Theater Project Writers Cohort. Carolina’s works have also been finalists for the Sokhary Chau Fellowship, Leah Ryan Fund, BricLab, and Bushwick Starr; and semifinalists for O'Neill, Playwrights Realm, Space on Ryder, and Princess Grace.

As a Co-Founding Producing Artistic Leader of The Sống Collective and Creative Director of Mai House Studio and Betterfly Productions, Carolina is dedicated to fostering community through the arts. In her role as Associate Director for Community Engagement at PlayCo, she bridges the gap between performance and social impact. As a community organizer, her work is grounded in radical care and organizes where she's needed: e-sims for Gaza, anti-deportation work, community fridges, bailouts, J*il support, undocumented communities, mutual aid, etc. Founding member of Asians4Abolition. BFA Brooklyn College

Rebecca Ho is a half Vietnamese, half Chinese actor and VO artist who was born and raised in Brisbane, Australia. She is currently based in NYC.

A recent grad of Columbia University's MFA Acting Program, Rebecca continues to work on the New York stage and surrounding regional areas. She recently made her Off-Broadway debut in Dilaria at the DR2 theatre alongside Christopher Briney (The Summer I Turned Pretty). Her film Explaining Elizabeth was the opening feature and official selection for the Big Apple Film Festival 2024. Her first VO commercial for Bibigo Dumplings aired 2024, with another for StreetEasy shortly following after. Rebecca was also hand-selected to be in the 2024-2025 inaugural cohort of The Actor's Center Mentorship Program.

Rebecca is also a dialect coach, specialising in Australian, British RP and General American accents.

When she's not acting, she can usually be found putting her 16+ years of dance experience to good use in her living room or reading her complete collection of Peanuts comics.
