Tween Social Swim
About this Event
Tween Social Swim is a fun and supportive therapeutic recreation group for youth with disabilities, offered in our therapy pool. This new summer offering provides opportunities to develop and strengthen social skills in a pool setting through a combination of structured activities and unstructured social time.
Tween Social Swim will provide participants the opportunity to:
- Learn and practice skills for social communication, peer interaction, and building friendships
- Practice the routines of visiting a recreation pool
- Build confidence and independence to support community participation
Participant Criteria:
- TVCC clients aged 10-14 or eligible to register as a client
- Able to safely and independently participate in the water
- Able to use change rooms independently or have parent/caregiver support before and after the program
- Interest and willingness to participate in swimming with peers
- Able to participate safely in group activities with a 1:3 staff to client ratio; participants are welcome to have a support person present to assist them
- Able to remain in a pool setting for the duration of the program (i.e. does not require frequent breaks outside of room/group; remains with group; tolerates others in their space)
- Able to participate in group activities without engaging in behaviours that are harmful to themselves or others
- Has a reliable method of communicating their wants and needs
About the TVCC Therapeutic Pool:
- The TVCC pool is 6.4m/21ft long, with a shallow end of 0.79m/2.5ft, and a deep end of 1.2m/4ft.
- The pool is 34C/93F.
- Little Swimmers or a waterproof swim diaper/cover (no diapers!) are required for anyone unable to hold their bladder/bowel.
- There are no food/drinks allowed in the pool area, pool change rooms, or pool washrooms.
