ABOUT DEDRICK WEATHERSBY
Early Life and The Spark of Performance
Born on April 6, 1990, in Marshall, Texas, and raised in Longview, Texas (locally known as "Hollywood"), Dedrick Weathersby began his journey into the arts early. His first stage experience occurred at Pinewood Park Elementary in a production of The Nutcracker. Under the guidance of early mentors like Mrs. Mattie Cuba and Mrs. Pamela Mercer McWilliams, Dedrick developed into a "triple threat"—balancing singing, dancing, and acting.
His formal training took place at Lon Morris College on a full-ride scholarship, where he became the first African American Student Body President and earned dual degrees in Musical Theatre and Business Management. He later attended The University of Texas at Tyler before moving to California in 2012 to pursue his lifelong dream of being a full-time performer.
An Award-Winning Career
Dedrick is an accomplished and celebrated performer, recognized for his ability to embody iconic figures with depth and soul rather than simple imitation. His accolades include:
- 2022 Emmy Award Winner (Best Interview and Discussion – Theatre Corner on PBS/KPBS)
- Broadway World Award Winner
- NAACP Award Winner
He is a proud member of multiple professional unions, including Actors’ Equity Association, SAG-AFTRA, and the Dramatists Guild.
The "Architect" of Tribute: Little Richard and James Brown
Dedrick is widely known for creating and starring in high-impact musical productions that honor Black musical legends.
Tutti Frutti: The Musical: Dedrick wrote and stars in this production, which recently saw a celebrated West Coast Premiere at the Lesher Center for the Arts. The show chronicles the life of Little Richard (Richard Wayne Penniman) from his discovery in 1948 to his peak in 1957. It is licensed exclusively by Sony Music Publishing.
Remembering James: The Life and Music of James Brown: Opening in 2019, this production ran for six months at Boxcar Theatre in San Francisco and embarked on a national tour. Critics have hailed his performance as "phenomenal," noting he captures the presence of Denzel Washington with the vocal power of the "Godfather of Soul."
Philanthropy and Community Impact
Beyond the stage, Dedrick is a dedicated philanthropist and educator. He is the founder and Executive Director of Super Bad Theater Company and Weathersby Productions LLC.
Scholarships: He has quietly awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to graduating students of color pursuing business and the arts.
Author: He is the author of six books, including "How I See Myself," a collection of inspirational vignettes for African American youth.
Education: He runs the Youth Creative Ethics Workshop in multiple school districts across Northern California and serves as a vocal coach at Modern Tone Studios.
Artistic Philosophy
Dedrick operates under the motto: “You can never lose betting on yourself.” He views his art as "artivism"—using the stage to keep Black stories alive and to provide opportunities for emerging artists. Having experienced personal hardship in his youth, he remains a "giver by nature," fueled by his humble beginnings to create a legacy of compassion, empowerment, and high-caliber storytelling.
