About this Event

Join a Community Clay Project in San Pedro

Artist April Adewole invites you to participate in Turning the Port, a community-built ceramic installation inspired by the waters, labor, and movement surrounding the Port of Los Angeles.

Participants will handbuild ceramic tumblers that will later be mounted onto a wood-and-metal structure designed to resemble prayer wheels. Once assembled, the vessels will gently rotate, catching light and wind while holding the marks and stories of the people who made them.

Each session contributes directly to the final sculpture.

When the sessions are full, the structure is complete.

What You’ll Do

During this guided workshop you will:

• Handbuild a ceramic tumbler using stoneware clay
• Add textures, marks, color or words to personalize your piece
• Contribute your vessel to the collective art installation

No pottery experience is necessary.
All materials are provided.

Your tumbler will be fired and installed as part of the final artwork.

About the Project

Turning the Port is a participatory public art project rooted in reflection and community authorship.

The Port of Los Angeles moves goods across oceans every day, yet it also sits within a neighborhood, San Pedro.

This project invites the community to slow down and shape something by hand.

A vessel for water.
A vessel for intention.
A vessel that turns.

Together these tumblers will form a rotating sculptural structure, a quiet civic offering created by many hands.
