Turkey Wing Whisk Broom Making

This beginner-friendly class explores the historic methods of making whisk brooms by hand. We will use broomcorn, a variety of sorghum, to make "turkey wing" style whisk brooms with woven handles. Each student leaves with 2 hand-made brooms!

No broom making experience necessary. This class requires manual dexterity and the ability to pull using both arms. Appropriate for ages 15 and up.

INSTRUCTOR

Gwen Raffo is a multidisciplinary artist and maker from Staten Island, NY. She has been making sorghum brooms for four years and specializes in the history of the trade in 19th-century America. She holds a BA in History from Acadia University in Nova Scotia, Canada where she also spent time as an artist-in-residence for broom making at Port Bickerton Lighthouse. She also has experience demonstrating other historic trades such as spring pole lathe turning and splint basket weaving.

Class size limited to 6 students. Minimum 3 students. We reserve the right to cancel the class if we do not have a minimum amount of students so please purchase your tickets early. If we cancel, we will refund you in full and notify you. You may cancel and get a refund up to three days before the class. After that, refunds are contingent on us being able to fill your seat. Under no circumstances do we offer refunds to individuals who cancel on the same day. If you cancel, please note that Eventbrite fees are non-refundable.
