Tundra Seed Collection Volunteer Day

Project Description
We will be collecting seeds from native plants in the tundra for use in restoration projects within the park. In the spring, our greenhouse will grow out plants from those seeds to restore areas in the tundra affected by human-caused disturbances, which can take hundreds of years to recover on their own. Join us in protecting our park’s most fragile ecosystem!
What to Expect:
Seed collection will occur across the road from the Alpine Visitor Center on Trail Ridge Road at an elevation of 11,796 ft. We will be walking up to ¼ mile, sometimes off trail on uneven and sloped terrain (we will explain methods for walking on tundra to limit impact). Collection will involve kneeling, stooping, and bending over. Even minimal physical exertion at this altitude can prove difficult, so be prepared to pace yourself, drink water, and bring salty snacks. Water coolers will be available onsite for refills. Be prepared for variable weather conditions (sun, wind, heat, cold, light rain). Please arrive at the meeting point early or on time, as we will be unable to wait or provide transportation for late arrivals.
Minimum age: 18 years
Time: 8:30AM – 4:00PM
Departure and return location: Meet in the outdoor plaza in front of the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. Volunteers will be driven into the park via a shuttle van.
Work site: Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park
Nearest bathroom: Alpine Visitor Center, ~¼ mile away
Provided PPE: Work gloves, sunscreen, kneeling pads, hi-vis safety vests, electrolyte mix
Gear to bring: multiple layers for warmth (it will be colder and windier than you expect on the tundra), rain jacket, sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses), day pack, lunch and snacks, water. You may want to bring your own gloves (for warmth and gardening).
