A little history…
In 1968, Robbie Robertson and The Band had just released their debut album “Music From Big Pink,” and Bernie Taupin (Elton John’s writing partner) was completely taken with its Americana themes. Taupin convinced Elton to make an album about the Old West. In 1970, things were really coming together for Elton John. The rising UK star had released his self-titled second album. For his third album, Elton decided the time was right to make a left turn.
“Tumbleweed Connection” was released on October 30, 1970, full of dusty Americana. With Taupin's lyrics touching on the Civil War and Wild West imagery, the British lads had crafted an authentically country and western album deep in the heart of London's Trident Studio with producer Gus Dudgeon.
“Tumbleweed Connection” is considered by many music critics and fans as Elton's best work (along with “Goodbye Yellow Brink Road”). With subjects that include hired guns, preachers, gamblers, rustlers, and Civil War veteran, its sound is stripped down to nothing but great songwriting, singing, and arranging, it was the “pre-glam” Elton John.
While there were no singles released from “Tumbleweed Connection” it contains some of John's most beloved deep cuts, including “Where to Now St. Peter?” “Love Song” “Ballad of a Well Known Gun,” and “Country Comfort.”
This show sold out two nights at The Thelma last October, so make sure to grab your tickets soon!
