About the Programme

If you do not consider yourself a poet, nor have you been writing poetry, join us to try poetry!
Embark on a new journey in the Arts through poetry writing. This workshop is for anyone who is new to poetry and who would like to have some fun in expressing themselves through short poetry forms or work in a group to create a long collaborative poem.
Outline of the workshop:
1. Introduction to short poetry forms such as haiku, tanka, and limerick.
2. Hands-on writing haiku either individually or in a group.
3. Understand the elements of made-in-Singapore poetry forms.
4. Hands-on writing short 4-line stanzas/poems based on a theme.
5. Merge the 4-line stanzas into a long collaborative poem.
6. Go with the flow!
Dates:
9th July 2024 and 16th July 2024
The sessions are independent of each other. Participants are welcome to register for both sessions.
Note:
Participants' contribution to a collaborative poem during the workshop may be used by the National Library Board and/or the workshop facilitator for publicity and publication purposes in the context of poetry, unless the participant has chosen to opt out at the start of the workshop.
About the Facilitator
Jennifer Leong (also known as Soy Avocado) started writing poetry in 2021 to raise funds for autism. Through divine inspiration, she created the ‘duatrespentastep’ poetry form. Her poem ‘Hills’ in this poetry form won the Spirit of the Festival Award at the Frances Browne Literary Festival Multilingual Poetry Competition 2022 in Ireland.
Jennifer advocates for hope through her poetry, which is often multilingual and multidirectional. It was an epiphany for her when she realised that poetry is not merely about forms, nor about having fun with wordplay.
Poetry is cathartic, allows the heart to speak, and uplifts the spirit. She is convinced everyone should try poetry and collaborations in the arts are powerful. She is active in written and spoken word.

Please note the following:

• All participants are required to register for a ticket. Each ticket admits 1 person only. Please present your ticket when you enter the library and the event venue. 
• Arrive 10 mins before the session commences. Seats of late attendees may be given to those in the waitlist. 
• NLB reserves the right to deny entry to participants who do not abide by the ground rules. 
• Photographs and videos will be taken during the session and images captured may be used for publicity purposes.
