Author and journalist Ann Hagedorn explores myths and truths about the daring women and men, Black and white, who worked throughout Ohio.
About this Event

She will share some lessons learned through the years of exploring the underground railroad, and she may reveal some details about her next book, which will focus on the moral brilliance of the female abolitionists.
Since the publication of Beyond the River, Hagedorn has given numerous lectures nationwide based on its themes, spreading the word about the importance of Ohio in the abolitionists’ crusade to end slavery.

About the speaker: Ann Hagedorn is a former staff writer for The Wall Street Journal and an award-winning author of six narrative nonfiction books that embrace a broad range of topics and have been widely reviewed. The Wall Street Journal described her most recent book, Sleeper Agent, as "A historical page-turner of the highest order."

Hagedorn was a history major at Denison University and holds master’s degrees from the University of Michigan and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, plus an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Denison. She has recently been elected into the Society of American Historians “in recognition of the narrative power and scholarly distinction of her historical work.”

Her quest as a nonfiction writer is to use the literary techniques of storytelling to deliver deeply-researched topics of significance to the general reader – especially to reveal remarkable people and events that fell into an abyss of obscurity. After living in New York City for two decades, she now writes her books in a small town on the Ohio River, which she discovered while researching her third book, Beyond the River: The Untold Story of the Heroes of the Underground Railroad.
