Aikoinaan, kauan ennen kuin kukaan oli kuullut Maunulan Majasta – ihmiset juhlivat syksyn pimeydessä muinaista juhlaa nimeltä Samhain. Silloin sytytettiin lyhtyjä, pukeuduttiin kummituksiksi ja oltiin varmuuden vuoksi ystävällisiä kaikille – etenkin niille, jotka näyttivät vähän haamuilta.
Vuosisatoja myöhemmin Atlantin toisella puolella Halloween sai uuden, nelipyöräisen muodon. 1990-luvulla amerikkalaiset vanhemmat keksivät turvallisemman tavan kerätä karkkeja: Trunk & Treat – tapahtuma, jossa lapset kiertävät auton takaluukulta toiselle ja saavat herkkuja suoraan koristelluista peräkontista.
Alabamassa kerrotaan edelleen legendaa pastorin vanhasta Fordista, jonka takaluukusta jaettiin ensimmäiset karkit ja jossa oli enemmän luurankoja kuin autossa istuimia. (Tarina on puoliksi totta, mutta niin on moni muukin hyvä legenda.)
Nykyään Trunk & Treat on levinnyt ympäri maailmaa – ja nyt myös tänne Maunulan Majalle, missä osataan yhdistää hämärä pihapiiri, hyvät tarjoilut ja sopiva määrä kummituksia!
Trunk & Treat on uudempi amerikkalainen perinne, jossa lapset kiertävät auton peräkontilta peräkontille ovelta ovelle -keruun sijaan.
Osallistujat koristelevat autonsa Halloween-hengessä – mutta muistetaan, että paikalle tulee paljon pieniä lapsia, joten kaikkein pelottavimmat K18-koristeet voi säästää muihin juhliin. 👻
Maunulan Majalla mukaan voi tulla myös koristellulla fillarilla, picnic-pöydällä tai vaikka kärryllä – vain mielikuvitus rajana!
Osallistujat tuovat mukanaan yksittäispakattuja karkkeja jaettavaksi kierroksella kierteleville lapsille, jotka huutavat perinteiseen amerikkalaiseen tyyliin:
“Trick or Treat!” 🍬
Autot sijoitetaan alueen reunoille, niin että keskelle jää tilaa kulkea ja juoksennella.
Arvioiden mukaan Majan pihapiiriin mahtuu noin 30 autoa.

Trunk & Treat at Maunula Lodge
Friday, October 31st, 6–9 PM
Once upon a time, long before anyone had heard of Maunula Lodge, people celebrated an ancient festival called Samhain in the darkness of autumn. That was when they lit lanterns, dressed up as ghosts, and were just in case, friendly to everyone – especially those who looked a little ghostly.
Centuries later, on the other side of the Atlantic, Halloween took on a new, four-wheeled form. In the 1990s, American parents came up with a safer way to collect candy: Trunk & Treat – an event where children go from one car trunk to another and get treats straight from the decorated trunks.
In Alabama, there is still a legend about a pastor’s old Ford, from whose trunk the first candy was distributed, and which had more skeletons than seats in the car. (The story is half true, but so are many other good legends.)
Today, Trunk & Treat has spread all over the world – and now also here at Maunula Maja, where they know how to combine a dark courtyard, good food and a suitable number of ghosts!
Trunk & Treat is a newer American tradition, where children go from trunk to trunk of a car instead of collecting from door to door.
Participants decorate their cars in the Halloween spirit – but remember that there will be a lot of small children, so you can save the scariest K18 decorations for other parties. 👻
At Maunula Maja, you can also come with a decorated bike, picnic table or even a cart – only your imagination is the limit!
Participants bring individually wrapped candies to distribute to the children walking around, who shout in the traditional American style:
“Trick or Treat!” 🍬
The cars will be placed on the edges of the area, so that there is room in the middle to walk and run.
According to estimates, the courtyard of the Maunulan can accommodate about 30 cars.

Registration helps the organizers plan the places, lights and candy supply.
