Finding your True North
The stars invite us to explore the greatness of the universe and our galaxy. When we look at the night sky we feel the wonder of the cosmos, and our connection to a mystery beyond our ordinary day and awareness.
Get ready for a star struck 8-week creative journey with artist Dee Petit as she navigates us through the stars to assist each student in finding their TRUE NORTH. The North Star guides us in our earthly existence. Youth will create 3-D eight-pointed star mobiles with recycled materials and paper mâché which symbolizes their earthy existence and their individual connection with the stars. Our ancestors understood that balance in life was dependent on, and tied to the seasons, the cycles of the moon, the life-giving sun and thy ever-bright star light.
This project is connected to Maramataka (the Maori Lunar Calendar) where the reappearance of the “Matariki”, seven sisters star cluster, shines in the early morning sky which brings the past year to a close and marks the beginning of the new year.
Mātauranga Māori (ancestral knowledge and wisdom) is at the heart of Matariki for it is a time for:
• Remembrance – Honouring those we have lost since the last rising of Matariki
• Celebrating the present – Gathering together to give thanks for what we have
• Looking to the future – Looking forward to the promise of a new year
• Finding one’s TRUE NORTH
8-week program is for Youth 6+
Cost: $280 (all materials provided)
At the end of our 8-week journey, we'll host a True North Star Exhibition, from Friday 28 June through 13 July with an opening ceremony Friday 28 June @ 6pm, honouring Matariki public holiday, at Shiloh Creative Life Centre showcasing our galaxy of brilliant star clusters of eight pointed stars. We invite your whānau to celebrate the incredible connections between you and the stars.
Dee Petit is the Founder/Creative Director of Shiloh Creative Life Centre. Creativity has always been a big part of Dee’s life. Born in the USA in a small town south of Detroit Michigan, Dee has always been interested in many forms of art. Illustration and print design, floral design, basket weaving, pottery, felting, fibre art and sewing have been some of the artform she has worked with throughout the years. She has a passion to work with our youth in hopes to inspire, stimulate and ignite their creative genius to set sail on their journey in finding their true north and place here on earth.
