True Demotion - Durational Performance
An assistant and an artist will participate in a shared online session of Minecraft. Throughout the performance, the artist will attempt to construct a replica of the gallery space while the assistant continuously seeks to destroy it by any means available within the game. The performance concludes when the gallery has been fully built, completely destroyed, or after two hours of real time have elapsed.
Paying homage to the storied tradition of dismantling art spaces through acts of demolition, True Demotion streamlines this recurring gesture through virtual adaptation. In the ongoing desire to reconfigure, deconstruct, and reimagine institutions, the act of institutional disassembly appears to have been dismantled itself, excavated into a familiar routine and reduced to a repeatable mechanic.
