Celebrated worldwide for their artistry and deep musical connection, Trio Brasileiro brings a radiant and intimate approach to Brazilian choro. Their album Rosa dos Ventos (Windrose) earned a 2018 Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album and was named one of DownBeat Magazine’s Top 20 Jazz Recordings of the Year, a testament to the trio’s expressive power and technical brilliance.
The group’s chemistry is rooted in lifelong bonds: brothers Douglas Lora (seven‑string guitar) and Alexandre Lora (percussion) grew up making music together, and later found their artistic counterpart in Dudu Maia, a master of the bandolin. Their annual creative retreats in Caraíva not only led to the founding of the ensemble Caraivana but also forged the profound musical partnership that is the heart of Trio Brasileiro.
Each musician brings extensive study of their instrument and the rich traditions of choro—a genre shaped by African rhythms and European classical influences, and, as cultural historian Bruno Carvalho notes, remains “one of Brazil’s most popular music styles” even after 150 years. Whether performing classic choro or their own original works, the trio’s performances shimmer with nuance, rhythmic interplay, and an unmistakable sense of joy.
Pacific Northwest audiences may remember their standout appearance at Wintergrass 2020 and their beloved, often sold‑out faculty concerts at Centrum in Port Townsend.
