About this Event

In today’s fractured society, how is Christianity shaping — and being shaped by — the political landscape in America?

Griswold, acclaimed author of Circle of Hope: A Reckoning with Love, Power, and Justice in an American Church, and McCrummen, staff writer covering religion and politics at The Atlantic, will join moderator Lisa Benenson, Trinity’s chief communications officer, for a free talk exploring political polarization and faith, and the role of the church in this moment.

Trinity’s rector, the Rev. Phillip A. Jackson, will open the event.

Optional small group discussions facilitated by members of Trinity’s Faith Formation and Education team will follow the conversation around 2pm.

Eliza Griswold is a Pulitzer Prize winner, bestselling author, and journalist whose work centers on the complex intersection of religion, politics, human rights, and the environment. Born into a devout family — her father was the 25th Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church — Griswold brings a unique perspective and exacting journalism to her latest book, Circle of Hope: A Reckoning with Love, Power, and Justice in an American Church, a timely reflection on fracture and polarization across American institutions.

Stephanie McCrummen is a staff writer at The Atlantic, where much of her work has focused on the Christian Right. Her professional honors include the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting among other awards. Prior to joining The Atlantic, she was a national reporter at The Washington Post, writing about the forces that shape American politics and identity.

Eliza Griswold’s book Circle of Hope: A Reckoning with Love, Power, and Justice in an American Church will be available for purchase.

Doors open at 12:30pm. Registration for this free event is required as seating is limited. Admission is first come, first served, with ticket holders receiving priority (although not guaranteed entrance if the venue reaches capacity).
