This special event honors local heroes whose service, leadership, and compassion have made a meaningful impact throughout Eastern Iowa. From courageous first responders to dedicated volunteers, these individuals embody the spirit of unity, patriotism, and commitment to community.❤️🤍💙
During the ceremony, we will recognize four outstanding individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary service and inspired others through their positive contributions to the lives of those around them. Their dedication continues to strengthen our community and encourage future generations to serve others.
Doors will open at 7:30 AM, with breakfast and the recognition ceremony beginning at 8:00 AM.
Following the ceremony, a public Flag Raising Ceremony will take place outside the Veterans Memorial Building.
The four 2026 honorees will also serve as the Grand Marshals of the 2026 Freedom Festival Parade.

The 2026 Tribute to Heroes honorees include:
Gerald “Gerry” Wegmann:
Gerald “Gerry” Wegmann will be honored posthumously for his lifelong commitment to service, veterans, youth programs, and the Cedar Rapids community. A decorated Vietnam War veteran and Bronze Star recipient, Gerry dedicated countless hours to supporting fellow veterans through the American Legion Honor Guard, Honor Flights, Meals on Wheels, youth sports umpiring, Boys State programs, and church volunteer work. Known for his humility, kindness, and compassion, Gerry continued serving others until the day he passed away while delivering Meals on Wheels.
Crystal Ellis:
Crystal Ellis is being recognized for her tireless volunteer work supporting animals, children, and organ donation awareness throughout Eastern Iowa. Through her leadership with Dogs Forever, Project Linus, Team Iowa, and the Iowa Donor Network, Crystal has impacted countless lives through fundraising, community outreach, and advocacy. Her passion for helping others and creating meaningful community connections continues to make a lasting difference across the region.
Kim Heeren:
Kim Heeren is being honored for her unwavering dedication to supporting veterans and military families. Through her work organizing care package drives, fundraising efforts, and recreational outings for veterans, Kim has created meaningful opportunities for healing, connection, and support. Her compassion and commitment to serving those who served our country have made a lasting impact on veterans and their families throughout Eastern Iowa.
Harold Hopp:
Harold Hopp is a Vietnam War veteran and longtime community volunteer whose dedication to patriotism and service continues today. Following his military career, Harold became actively involved with the Patriot Guard, Honor Flight homecomings, military funeral honors, and the Solon American Legion Color Guard. His leadership, patriotism, and continued support of veterans and community events make him a true example of service above self.
