Show Time! Get Your Trees Ready for the 2026 TBS Expo! (July 10-12)
TBS Members,
It is time to put the finishing touches on your moss, select your accent plants, and get your trees looking pristine—the 2026 Triangle Bonsai Society Expo is just around the corner!
This year, we are taking over a newly renovated space that is 75% larger than previous years at Sarah P. Duke Gardens. We have room for an incredible display, and we want your trees to fill it! Our goal is to showcase over 40 trees, representing all skill levels from beginners to our seasoned artists.
Here are the essential details you need to know:
Expo Schedule & Location
Where: Kirby Horton Hall, Sarah P. Duke Gardens
• Friday, July 10 (Set Up & Load-In): Member tree drop-off begins at 12 PM (Noon). We need all trees in and the display fully staged by the end of the day, so we are ready for Saturday morning.
• Saturday, July 11 (Day 1): Open to the public from 10 AM – 4 PM. Formal judging of the display will take place on Saturday. The TBS New Talent Competition and the workshops take place.
• Sunday, July 12 (Day 2): Open to the public from 10 AM – 3:30 PM.
Workshops & Demos
We have a packed weekend, including public styling demonstrations and two fantastic workshops held in the greenhouse (featuring 20 junipers). We will also be hosting the New Talent Competition, so come out and cheer on our emerging stylists! A future email will go out calling for participants!
We Need Volunteers!
We can't do it alone. We are looking for volunteers to fill 3 slots per 2-hour shift on Saturday and Sunday to act as docents, greet the public, and manage the People's Choice voting station. Additionally, on Saturday and Sunday, we need TBS members to help guide the workshop and help teach/show participants how to create a bonsai of their own! Finally, we also need a strong "Strike Crew" at 3:30 PM on Sunday to help us hit our 4:30 PM exit deadline. (Future emails to come on volunteer sign-ups.)

Next Steps for Members:
1. Prep Your Trees: Clean your pots, wire any stray branches, and get your trees camera-ready for Joe Noga's photo studio.
2. Submit Your Entries: Please reply to this email to let us know which trees you plan on bringing so we can map out the layout.
3. Sign Up to Help: Let us know if you can cover a 2-hour docent shift or help with the Sunday teardown.
Let’s make the 2026 Expo our best show yet! If you have any questions about tree readiness or layout, feel free to reach out to Travis or I.
Best regards,
Drew and Travis
