I am happy to announce a September slate of events for the Appleton Lyceum. This is an organization that seeks to bring City of Appleton expertise and ideas to the entire community. It's a confusing time in our country, but whatever new growth comes next won't arrive via our screens, it will come as we listen and discuss ideas for our community. I hope you will consider attending these two events.
The first event is a reading group for the novel The Overstory by Richard Powers (Thursday, September 18, 6-7pm).The novel presents American lives through the lens and timeline of trees. It's one of my favorite books and I'll be leading the discussion. The library has copies (and they can be ordered if not on shelf). This book group is meant to get us thinking about trees and community, and hopefully be a starting point for a regular reading group.
The big event for September is the talk "Trees and Our Community" by Appleton city forester Mike Stanonik (Thursday, September 25, 6-7pm). I can tell you as an alderperson that I get lots of inquiries about trees. People in Appleton love the trees along their streets and in the parks! This will be a chance for Stanonik to talk about his work in Appleton from a personal perspective and to give a sense of how the city understands the role of trees in our community. There will also be a chance to ask questions afterwards.
Both of these events are in the Appleton Public Library. We hope you will set these events in your calendar!
