This session uses the National Child Traumatic Stress Network’s Core Curriculum in Child and Adolescent Trauma©. The Core Curriculum enhances practitioner knowledge in three domains, that include core conceptual and theoretical understanding, core components of trauma-focused interventions and core therapeutic skills.
Objectives:
- Apply the 12 Core Concepts for Understaing Child Traumatic Stress (NCTSN, 2012) as conceptual lenses to frame information and guide critical reasoning about a case study.
- Describe how traumatic events can affect very young children’s physiological, emotional, social, and cognitive functioning.
- Describe how preverbal children can communicate about their traumatic experiences through their behavior.
- Describe how therapeutic engagement is a process that beginsat referral and continues through treatment.
- List ways that caregiver and chil functioning are inter-connected and influence each other, especially during the first five years of life.
- Review how factors related to historical trauma and other preexisting ecological stressors can affect the family’s perception of and response to trauma.

Instructor: Cheryl Williams-Hecksel, LCSW
Cheryl Williams-Hecksel is on the faculty of the MSU School of Social Work. Cheryl is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has been with the School of Social Work since 2006. Prior to joining the faculty at MSU, she has spent more than 20 years in clinical and administrative roles in public and private child welfare and mental health agencies She is the Coordinator of the School of Social Work’s Evidence Based Trauma Treatment Certificate which prepares graduate social work students for clinical practice with survivors of trauma. She is an affiliate of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network and is certified as an advanced facilitator for the Core Curriculum in Child and Adolescent trauma. Her work includes consultation with organizations around their capacity to be trauma informed. She provides frequent professional continuing education related to trauma informed practice, workforce issues, supervision and leadership.
Instructor: Amanda Dubey-Zerka, LMSW
Amanda Dubey-Zerka, LMSW received her Master's Degree from Michigan State University in 2006. Amanda is an Instructor for MSU School of Social Work and co-owns Wise Willow Counseling & Consulting in East Lansing, MI. Amanda is Nationally Certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD (CPT – PTSD), and has over 14 years of experience working with children, teens, and adults who have survived trauma. Amanda is a Master Trainer for the Michigan ACE Initiative and regularly provides trainings on the impact of trauma and ACEs.
