When we hear the word “trauma,” we often think of devastating events that can haunt us and make it harder to navigate through life. But even "normal" events like bullying, embarrassment, loss of loved ones, and being made to feel unsafe or unworthy can cause psychological trauma. So . . .What IS trauma?
How does it affect the brain and nervous system?
How can yoga help heal trauma?
Join us as trauma therapist Michelle Christy helps us answer these questions and offers guidance on how to make general yoga classes more trauma-informed and more sensitive to students who may be dealing with the effects of trauma.
With over 30 years of experience in the mental health field, Michelle has dedicated her career to serving individuals and communities. Her diverse foundation led to her co-founding WV Therapy and Wellness Center, where she now practices as a licensed mental health counselor specializing in trauma therapy utilizing modalities such as EMDR and IFS. Her approach to trauma therapy has evolved to holistic wellness practices, including Yoga. It is her firm belief that healing and growth occur when we address the full spectrum of human experience: mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual.
This workshop will include the practice of asana, pranayama (breathwork), and meditation - so dress comfortably (ideally in layers for easier thermoregulation). While this workshop is open to anyone interested in learning how yoga can help heal trauma, Registered Yoga Teachers can earn 4 hours of continuing education with Yoga Alliance.
