Trauma-Informed Approaches to Intimate Partner Violence Investigations

This FREE training is designed to equip law enforcement with the knowledge and tools to recognize the impact of trauma on survivors, respond utilizing trauma-informed strategies, and strengthen investigative outcomes through evidence-based approaches.
Session objectives:
· Identify the dynamics of intimate partner violence (IPV), the many crimes associated with IPV, and the elements of the crime.
· Describe the right to self-defense and address civil liability as it relates to IPV for law enforcement.
· Define and understand custody and visitation laws in IPV cases.
· Recognize the importance of minimizing re-traumatization, building trust with survivors, awareness of community resources and linkage to support for survivors, and gathering comprehensive information through effective interview techniques.

About the trainer:
Dottie Davis, Davis Corporate Training, Inc.
Dottie Davis is an internationally recognized speaker who previously served 32 years with the Fort Wayne Police Department where she attained the rank of Deputy Chief and was last assigned as the Director of Training at their police academy. She implemented and wrote policy for the agency for the Crisis Intervention Team and for the Lethality Assessment Program and served as a hostage negotiator for 7 years. During her career she received two Meritorious Service Citations, named law enforcement officer of the year by the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and a Lifetime Achievement Award recipient from the Rocky Mountain Women in Law Enforcement. She is dedicated to the prevention and intervention of suicide, and therefore contracts with CIT International to train law enforcement and mental health professionals across the world to better respond to individuals in a mental health crisis. She is also a contracted trainer for the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Law Enforcement Training and Technical Assistance Consortium, the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and the Indiana Coalition to End Sexual Assault. Davis is a graduate of the National FBI Academy, Gavin de Becker & Associates Advanced Threat Assessment Academy, and Purdue University, and is the owner of Davis Corporate Training, Inc., a private consulting firm focusing on violence prevention and expert witness testimony in both civil and criminal cases. Her memoir, STRANGLED: A Survivor’s Plea To Men Who Look The Other Way was released on March 8, 2026, International Women’s Day.
