Join us at the Joslyn Castle Carriage House for Transit Planning Workshop hosted by Metro Transit. Design your own transit system: A hands-on adventure on how routes become reality.
Where: Joslyn Castle Carriage House
3902 Davenport St. Omaha, NE 68131
When: Wednesday, July 29, 6-8pm
What: Free, all ages workshop (recommended for children age 10+ accompanied by adult)
Think designing a transit system is as simple as drawing lines on a map? Come find out for yourself. This workshop will give you the chance to design your own transit system for a fictional city with real world circumstances. Will you prioritize getting students to school? Will your highest frequency route extend to the suburbs? What happens when elected leaders want you to focus on a large, attention-getting event for tourists? This workshop covers topics transit planners have to think through every day: network design, frequency, land use, right-of-way, operations costs, equity, and access. Come experience for yourself how routes become reality.
Evan Schweitz is Metro Transit’s Sr. Manager of Planning and Scheduling. He grew up in Nebraska and attended UNL, where he spent a semester studying Portuguese and Urbanism in Fortaleza, Brazil. Seeing the efficiency of their bus system and its ability to deliver independence and upward mobility to people from all walks of life inspired Evan to consider how to bring these same benefits back to his community. In 2017, Evan obtained a Masters of Urban Studies from UNO, focusing his capstone on Transit-Oriented Development opportunities in North Omaha. With more than 16years of experience at Metro Transit, Evan has worked on projects such as restructuring Omaha’s bus routes in 2015, serving on the design team for the Dodge Street ORBT line, and continually engaging with the community to seek improvements to the city’s public transportation system.
