Transgression Transaction is a group exhibition at Kirks’ Grocery featuring work by Montana artists regarding the overlap of transgression and transaction in our lives.
Artists Include: Renee Audette, Manette Rene Bradford, Rose Caplette, Shane de Leon, Jane Waggoner Deschner, Stephanie Dishno, Stephen Glueckert, Shan Graf, John Henry Haseltine, Maggy Rozycki Hiltner, Jason Jam, Cristina Marian, Stella Nall, Molly Ouellette (poetry), Kathryn W. Schmidt, Mary Serbe
Transgression is that crossing over, just dipping one or two toes in the water over that imagined line. Being ourselves can feel like a transgression. Standing up for others can be transgression. Creating art creating can be transgression, transaction, or both.
Transaction. Art holds incredible meaning while also being bought and sold. A sale is good news for an artist making a living on their work or simply in search of funds for more supplies. An art purchase can delight someone who brings that art into their home, their life. The transactional nature of the art market also propagates false ideas, such as “Art is only good if people buy it,” or “The only real artists are people who make a living at their art.”
Fine Art Raffles
Raffle tickets will be $25 each or 5 tickets for $100. Raffle winners selected on November 22.
Raffle #1: The winner will receive Maggy Rozycki Hiltner’s Prayer for New Hands (value $2,000) at the conclusion of the exhibition. The artist has donated her work so that 100% of proceeds go to Kirks’.
Raffle #2: The winner will receive one unsold piece work of art of their choice at the conclusion of the exhibition. Proceeds will benefit the artist (who will get their full commission on retail price) and Kirks’.
“This exhibition is made possible by your transactions. Every purchase made here supports your community and a network of working, living, breathing, thinking, feeling artists. All work is for sale in this exhibition, and two raffles are taking place to benefit and nourish artists and Kirks’ during this difficult time for the arts. $25 per raffle ticket or 5 tickets for $100. This world is made possible by your transgression. Joy is resistance. Art is resistance. Community is resistance. Seek to disrupt.” Anna Paige
Thanks to Kendall Delcambre, writer and poet, from Rayne, Louisiana for the exhibition title.
