Transformation and Translation

To put anything into words, whether spoken, sung, or written, is to translate it into writing, which transforms it while giving it meaning in the process. Spoken and written literature always entails remaking: what emerges in words has been carried across (translated) into a new context and reshaped (transformed) in the process. An idea, an image, an utterance—all are altered by their passage into words. This is also true when a work is shifted into a new genre, like a memory into a poem or archival research into memoir. “I love you” does not mean the same thing in a sonnet as it does in a text to a loved one, and the force of those words depends on what they have translated and, as a result, transformed.

Join this afternoon’s panelists for a reading and discussion of translation/transformation between and across genres, cultures, and languages.

Free parking is available on side streets (Moss Street, Linden Avenue, and Fort Street), as well as the Central Middle School parking lot on Fort Street. Please abide by parking signs; do not park where it is posted Residential Only, as you may be ticketed. Please give yourself plenty of time to find parking before your event.
