Trans Art Club Manchester
About this Event
What's on offer
4 session courses from professional artists and teachers. A welcoming, trans-first environment where you can express yourself and make your art.
What will we learn
The first course is in ceramics, and will cover slab building; hand modelling; slip painting; glazing; throwing on the wheel; kiln work; and other elements of studio ceramics.
Later courses will cover print making; textile arts and sewing; metalworking and jewellery design; digital arts and 3D work; and music theory and production.
What are sessions like
Sessions comprise 20 minutes of in depth, beginner friendly instruction in technique; a 20 minute break for (vegan) refreshments and chatting; and 50 minutes of free time to put what you learned into practice, or express yourself however you like. 10 minutes of collaborative clean up at the end. Hands on guidance will be provided throughout. Materials are free.
The sessions are relaxed, but focussed. We are serious about helping trans people access the arts and express themselves; we want participants to match that, and commit to attending all 4 sessions in a block.
Leave phones at the door / no photography. Come as you are.
Who is it for
This is a trans only arts club. All our members and the organiser are trans; cis people are not invited to attend. Some of the tutors are cis, but they are thoroughly trained, and explicitly dedicated to the cause of trans arts access and liberation.
These sessions are intended to reach people who have felt excluded from the art world in the past, for whatever reasons.
Spaces are limited. If you already have a serious art practice, please do not come. If you have a busy social calendar and you are looking for an additional hang, please consider if you actually need the spot.
Who are we
TACM is run by trans organiser Lucy Richards (she / her), and professional ceramicist and arts facilitator Alice Richards (she / her).
Where is it
TACM runs out of 7 Spot Studio, a pottery studio just off Regent Road
7 Spot is a safe place, toilets are all gender, and the studio will be closed to general members and staff during the sessions
When is it
The first course is running from Friday July 10th, with sessions following on the 24th of July, 7th of August, and 21st of August.
Sessions run 6pm - 8pm, the organisers will be there 5-9pm.
Is the space accesible
The studio is on the ground floor, and is flat, with waist height tables. A wheelchair user may find it difficult to access the studio, but we are working on it. If you use a wheelchair, please let us know and we will sort it out.
The environment is intended to be calm and comfortable. Music will be played at a sensible volume and participants can feel safe bringing up access needs they might have and we will do our best to accommodate.
Why split pricing
Transphobia in the arts affects all trans people, and trans-misogyny operates as additional barrier to access. Our pricing seeks to address that.
Can I bring my emotional support ally/ friend?
Nope 🙂↔️ In fact, it is better if you come by yourself!
It’s our experience that people get more out of workshops like these, both educationally and socially, when all the group members are starting from the same place.
