Whether you're an absolute beginner djembe player, intermediate, or advanced, if you're looking to level up your skills and have some fun, come and join us for some intensive play/study, every Saturday from 12 to 2pm, at The Vibrational Apothecary, 243 Gerrard Street East.
This is an ongoing class; unless I'm traveling, sick, or it's a major holiday (which I'll announce, somewhere), class is ON. But feel free to confirm attendance in advance - email me at [email protected]
We're always working on at least one traditional West African rhythm (from Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Cote D'Ivoire). You'll be learning accompaniment rhythms and traditional solos on the djembe, along with dundun and bell parts for either traditional and/or ballet-style variations. I'm particularly fond of Malinke rhythms, which offer a number of foundational elements that are excellent for broadening your rhythmic vocabulary and comprehension of the djembe & dunduns as expressive and melodic instruments.
Once we have the basic vocabulary down, we'll work on developing improvisational solo techniques from those phrases. We'll be working on each rhythm for at least long enough to give everyone a chance to get comfortable. Beyond working on specific rhythms, we'll spend some time each class working on developing technique and playing with different exercises and practice drills to build endurance and consistency.
I have a few spare djembes available for students, but please bring your own djembe if you have one - classes are $25 ea.
