Shave horses are a common tool used in traditional Appalachian crafts. I am most familiar with them through the lens of chair making and green wood working. During this weekend class I will walk you through the building of your very own shave mule following plans by Tom Donahey. We will use a few common power tools to complete this build.
Instructor Bio:
Katie Bister is the manager the Woodworking School at Pine Croft in Berea. During her time as a student at Berea College she worked in the Student Crafts woodshop learning about the design and production of wooden objects. After a few years she was showing new students the things she had learned and teaching the safe use of machines. In her senior year, she received a scholarship to take a chair making class at The Lost Art press where she stumbled into the fascinating world of chairmaking. She co-designed the People Collection Active Rocking Chair with her supervisor Rob Spiece which is now in production at Student Crafts and will be featured in an exhibition highlighting Women in Contemporary Chairmaking and Craft Education at Sawtooth School for Visual Art in North Carolina.
Minimum age: 16 (adult must be present for minors). Feel free to reach out to Warren to see if your kid will be a good fit.
This is a pay what you can event, with limited seats - there WILL be waitlists. With the horse included, this would normally be a $100+ workshop, but we encourage you to give what you are able to (even if that's $0). Our grant with Berea College allows us to do what we can to make these events as accessible as possible.
Our event system does not allow for sliding scale pricing - please pay through our Paypal account (credit cards accepted) or through cash at the door.
We WILL be reaching out as the event approaches to make sure you can still attend, if you've signed up.
