About Pamyua:
In 1995, brothers Qacung “Stephen” Blanchett and Phillip Blanchett founded Pamyua to honor and blend their Yup’ik Inuit and Black cultural heritages through music and dance. The following year, the group welcomed the deep traditional knowledge of Ossie Kairaiuak and the beautiful vocal talents of Karina Møller of Greenland (she is now based in Denmark)—creating a truly one-of-a-kind sound that fuses ancient Yup’ik drum songs and dance with soulful R&B, gospel, funk, and global influences.
Widely hailed as the Alaska's most influental band of the millienia" and “the most famous Inuit band in the world” (Rolling Stone), Pamyua has earned international recognition for their cultural respect and innovation. Highlights include winning Record of the Year at the Native American Music Awards, performing at prestigious venues and events worldwide (from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and The Smithsonion Museums in Washington, DC and New York, to royal celebrations in Greenland), and being celebrated by media outlets like Native People Magazine for their “blizzard of interlocking harmonies.” Their music has reached millions, including as the theme for the PBS Kids series Molly of Denali.
