“Gigi” was the apex of MGM producer Arthur Freed’s career, and a high point for director Vincente Minnelli as well. The movie made four times its budget, and was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning in every one of its categories, including Best Picture. The movie is based on a 1944 novella, and stars Leslie Caron in the title role, a young Parisian woman being set up by her aunt to be a courtesan to the elite of society. But instead, she and noted playboy Gaston enjoy spending time together. Society tries to keep them apart, but… ah, l’amour.
