Join Sierra Club and Solar United Neighbors for a community discussion about New Smyrna Beach Utilities’ (NSBU) latest proposal to gut net metering (NEM) and what it means for your energy bill.NSBU is doubling down on its violation of energy independence and affordability by trying to switch its NEM program to instantaneous netting. This would make it nearly impossible for solar customers to ever get credit for producing more energy than they consume. To make matters worse, NSBU’s proposal lacks grandfathering provisions, an unheard of decision that disrespects and undercuts the investments made by customers under past NEM tariffs. NSBU is clearly trying to obstruct rooftop solar despite its powerful, localized benefits— solar stabilizes the grid, reduces the need for expensive, centralized power plants, and keeps energy bills stable.No one should be punished or unfairly billed for exercising their energy independence.
