Tower Duo (Erin Helgeson Torres, flute and Michael Rene Torres, saxophone) has been performing together since 2007 and focuses on the music of living composers. Tower Duo's performances are innovative and narrative driven and often explore improvisation, multi-media, and collaboration with other arts. The Duo has since performed in Canada, Cuba, Spain, and all across the United States at schools, conferences, arts venues, and festivals, including artist residencies at numerous universities. Highlights include the 15th Bienal de la Habana international art festival, Omaha Chamber Music Society’s Eko Nova series, the Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project’s Re:Sound New Music Festival, and the ComProv Symposium.
“flora y fauna” will feature music broadly inspired by nature including “O Aderyn Pur” by Claire Polin which is one of the earlier works written for the flute and saxophone instrumentation (1974) and utilizes bird songs of the robin, indigo bunting, cardinal, blue jay, and sparrow all beautifully transcribed and orchestrated in Polin’s evocative post-tonal language. “flora y fauna” will also feature three exciting world premieres of new compositions by Ohio based composers commissioned for Tower Duo by the Johnstone Fund for New Music including “Fauna” by Robert McClure (Athens, OH), “Atmospheres” by Matthew Kennedy (Tiffin, OH), and “are they here to rescue us” by Michael Rene Torres (Columbus, OH).
Zach Hannah, the Johnstone Fund’s Poet in Residence, will recite a poem revealing his interpretation of the program.
Admission is free. This performance is part of the “New Music at Short North Stage” concert series. Seating is available on a first-come first-served basis and performances are recommended for ages 9 and older. Parking assistance is available through the ParkColumbus app.
